Terrell and Associated Families
Taken from An Addington/Chalfant Family History
by David Vern Addington, published 1992.
Jemima Emily Terrell is the maternal grandmother of Alma
Marguerite Chalfant.
The Terrell family is an old established
family that was of importance in England
and early Virginia.
The first members of this family arrived in Virginia in the
mid
1600s and settled in the central part of the state. In the early
1800s,
a few Terrell families moved to Clinton and Highland
Counties in Ohio in the very
early period of settlement of that
state. Around 1830 three Terrell families
moved to Randolph
County, Indiana and settled in Stony Creek Township.
Jemima
Emily Terrell was born in Randolph County, Indiana on
3 Dec 1837 to the George
Wesley and Sarah (Moore) Terrell and
was called by the name Emily. The Terrell
family lived in Stony
Creek Township where she grew up near the town of Windsor.
She married William F. Fitzpatrick on 22 Feb 1865 at the rather
late age of
27. They had at least three children Emma Alice
Fitzpatrick (born 26 Nov 1866),
Sarah M. Fitzpatrick (born 1875)
and George W. Fitzpatrick (born 1879) as shown
by the 1880
census. There may have been other children who died young.
George
Wesley Terrell was born in 1804 in Virginia according to
later census records
and then migrated with his family to Ohio
sometime before 1820 settling in Clinton
or Highland County.
On 27 Nov 1825 he married Sarah Moore (spelled Moor on the
marriage
record) in Highland County with Rev. David Terrell
performing the ceremony. The
Rev. David Terrell is probably
Sarah's uncle. Sarah Moore is the daughter of
William and
Winnifred (Terrell) Moore, and by 1850 when they are in their
80s,
they were living in the George Wesley Terrell household.
Winnifred Moore is also
a Terrell, the daughter of Benjamin and
Sarah (Parrott) Terrell. Sarah Moore
is a granddaughter of
Benjamin Terrell while George Wesley Terrell is a great
grandson,
meaning George Wesley married his second cousin.
The Terrell family had a history
of intermarrying.
Winnifred Terrell was born on 14 Oct 1760 in Virginia.
She first
married on 26 Nov 1781 in Bedford County, Virginia to Edward
Woodham
but he died soon afterwards. She married second on 3
Nov 1789 in Campbell County,
Virginia, to William Moore.
William Moore was a son of John and Mary Moore of
Albemarle
Parish of Surry County, Virginia and christened on 5 Apr 1767.
This
Moore family of Virginia is not related to the Moore family
from Delaware also
discussed in this book. The Moore family
moved to the Clinton County, Ohio sometime
between 1806 and
1820, probably with some of the Terrell families that moved
there.
There in 1825 Winnifred's daughter Sarah married George
Wesley Terrell. The
William Moores moved on to Randolph
County at the same time as George Wesley Terrell.
Cemetery
records in Randolph County show William Moore died 7 Oct
1855 at
age 88 years. Winnifred (Terrell) Moore died ten days
later on 17 Oct 1855 at
the age of 95 years. They are both buried
near Windsor in Union Cemetery. This
cemetery was originally
called the Terrell Cemetery, possibly George Wesley Terrell
donated
the land for it.
George Wesley Terrell moved his family to Randolph County
sometime
around 1827 and is listed in the 1830 census in Stony
Creek Township. George
Wesley Terrell is listed in the Indiana
censuses as George W. or as Wesley Terrell
so he probably went
by the name Wesley. He owned land about a mile and a half
southeast
of the town of Windsor and evidently farmed for the
rest of his life the land
he bought when he first moved to
Randolph County. George Wesley Terrell died
on 22 Mar 1878
and is buried in Union Cemetery, south of Windsor. Sarah
(Moore)
Terrell died on 8 Jul 1884 and is no doubt also buried in
Union Cemetery but no
stone has been found.
George Wesley and Sarah (Moore) Terrell had the following
children
(1)
William Terrell, b. 13 Jul 1827, Indiana
m. 22 Nov 1849, Rebecca Thornburg
m. 2nd 27 Mar 1856, Delaware Co., IN, Mary A. Thornburg
(2) Martha Ann Terrell,
b. c1830
m. 4 Apr 1850, John Tilman Cox
(3) Jemima Emily Terrell*, b. 3 Dec
1837, d. 7 Jun 1916
m. 22 Feb 1865, William F. Fitzpatrick
(4) George C. Terrell,
b. c1842, d. 22 Mar 1865
m. ? 30 Mar 1862, Delaware Co., Indiana, Sharon A. Glaze
There
may have been others who died at a young age given the
spread in birthdates for
the children.
Martha Ann Terrell married John Tilman Cox on 4 Apr 1850 and
they
were living in the Terrell household when the 1850 census
was taken. However,
he must have died within a few years since
Martha is listed in the 1860 census
back in the Wesley Terrell
household. Apparently they did not have any children.
William Terrell married Rebecca Thornburg on 22 Nov 1849.
They had two
children Lucinda J. and John W. Rebecca evidently
died sometime about 1854 or
1855 since William remarried to
Mary A. Thornburg on 27 Mar 1856. William and
Mary had
children Margaret, Sarah, George E., Ulysses, William "Grant",
Susannah,
Maude, Della and Lydia. William Terrell was a
minister in the Christian Church
around Windsor for over twenty
years.
George C. Terrell, son of George
Wesley and Sarah (Moore)
Terrell, was born in 1842. He married Sharon A. Glaze
on 30 Mar
1862 in Delaware County, Indiana. During the Civil War, George
enlisted
in the 124th Indiana Infantry and served with that
regiment in its service in
the western theater. He was wounded
in one of the regiment's last battles at
Goldsboro, North Carolina
and died the following day on 22 Mar 1865.
Two
other Terrells apparently migrated to Randolph County
about the same time as George
Wesley Terrell. Drummond S.
Terrell, born about 1803 in Virginia and John M.
Terrell, born
about 1811, Virginia, are listed in the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Indiana
census
records, also in Stony Creek Township. Wesley,
Drummond and John are most likely
brothers but there is no
confirming vital record data. The initial S. in Drummond's
name
probably stands for Smithson, since his maternal grandfather was
named
Drummond Smithson. A marriage record in Highland,
County, Ohio, stated that Drummond
Terrell married Judith
Merrill on 4 Oct 1825. Drummond can not be found in the
1830
Ohio or Indiana census, however, he is found in the 1840 Indiana
census
in Stony Creek Township, age 30-40 in a household with
1F15-20 and 1F60-70. Evidently
his wife died before 1840 and his
mother, Jemima (Smithson) Terrell, may be living
in his
household. The 1850 Indiana census shows him as age 40
(probably a
mistake) living in the Dudley household. A marriage
record in Clinton County,
Ohio states a Drummond S. Terrell
married Sarah Ratcliff on 25 Sep 1850. The
1860 Indiana census
shows a D. S. Terrell, age 47, born Virginia with wife Sarah
and
son John W. Terrell so evidently he married in Ohio but moved
back to Indiana.
John M. Terrell was born about 1811 in Virginia according to later
census
data. He married in Randolph County in 1833 to Eliza
Smithson, who is probably
his cousin. John M. Terrell is listed in
the 1840, 1850 and 1860 Randolph County
census in Stony Creek
Township. John and Eliza had the following children
(1)
William W. Terrell, b. c1835, IN, m. Elizabeth ?, b. 1847
(2) Drummond S. Terrell,
b. c1837, Indiana, d. aft 1900
m. 22 Feb 1859, Clinton, Co., Ohio, Louisa J.
Taylor
(3) Isaac Terrell, b. c1839, Indiana
(4) Elizabeth A. Terrell, b. c1842,
Indiana
(5) John E. Terrell, b. c1849, Indiana, m. Gertrude ?, b. 1856
(6)
George H. Terrell, b. c1859, Indiana
I have no vital record data that indicate
who was George Wesley
Terrell's father, but several pieces of data indicate that
it was
William Terrell who was born on 24 Mar 1779 in Campbell
County, Virginia.
He married on 25 Feb 1802 in Campbell
County to Jemima Smithson, the daughter
of Drummond and
Mary Smithson. They moved to Highland County, Ohio
sometime
between 1810 and 1820. William Terrell died there
sometime in or before 1834.
I believe George Wesley Terrell is
the son of William Terrell for the following
reasons (1) William
had a brother named George W. Terrell (born 1784) so those
names
are in the family, (2) Wesley named his first son William
(a fairly common custom
is this era to name your first son after
your father), (3) Wesley also named a
daughter Jemima, probably
his mother's name and (4) the Drummond Smithson family
also
moved to Randolph County and lived near George Wesley
Terrell. The 1840
Randolph County census shows Drummond
Terrell, age 30-40 in a household with a
female age 50-60. I
believe this to be his mother Jemima (Smithson) Terrell.
Also
listed two lines below is Drummond Smithson, age 80-90, and
wife, age
80-90 (Mary), Jemima's parents. Drummond Smithson
died in 1844 at the age of
90. His wife, Mary Smithson, is shown
in the 1850 Stony Creek Township census
as age 95, living with
her son Ira Smithson's family. It appears that the Smithson,
Moore
and Terrell families all moved together from Highland
County, Ohio.
The
patriarch of the Smithson family was Drummond Smithson
who was born 12 Jul 1754
in Virginia. The Tucker History of
Randolph County makes the following remarks
about
Drummond one year old when the French War broke out, 22 at
the signing
of the "immortal declaration", died age 90, 31 Dec
1844. Drummond's
wife Mary died 16 Jan 1851 at the age of 97
years. They are both buried in the
old section of Union
Cemetery.
The 1820 Highland County, Ohio census shows
William, David,
Henry and Samuel Terrell to have sons of the age of George
Wesley.
One published genealogy on the Terrell family, by
Cleste Jane Terrell Barnhill,
does not list a George Wesley,
Drummond or John Terrell as sons of David, Henry
or Samuel.
Unfortunately, that genealogy does not list the descendents of
William
Terrell and no other published list has been found. All I
can conclude is that
George Wesley Terrell is most probably the
son of William and Jemima (Smithson)
Terrell. Certainly if not
the son of William, he is of this same Terrell line.
William
Terrell was the son of Benjamin and Sarah (Parrott)
Terrell. Benjamin Terrell
was born in 1750 in Louisa County,
Virginia and married Sarah Parrott in the same
county. They
later moved to the northern portion of Pittsylvania County where
he
acquired large land holdings. From 1814 to 1820 he sold this
land and moved to
Clinton County, Ohio. Benjamin Terrell died
in Clinton County, Ohio on 15 Jun
1834. Sarah died on 21 Jun
1848. The children of Benjamin and Sarah (Parrott)
Terrell were
(1) William Terrell*, b. 24 Mar 1779, Pittsylvania Co., VA, d. bef
1834,
Highland Co., Ohio

Benjamin Terrell was born on 7 Nov
1750, probably in Caroline
County, Virginia, the son of David and Sarah (Johnson)
Terrell.
David Terrell was born in 1729 and married Sarah Johnson (born
10
Apr 1729) on 19 Jan 1749. Sarah Johnson was the daughter of
Benjamin and Agnes
(Clark) Johnson. See the separate Johnson
family write up for the history of
this family. David and Sarah
(Johnson) Terrell had the following children
(1)
Agatha Terrell, b. 17 Dec 1749
m. ? Pulliam
(2) Benjamin Terrell*, b. 7 Nov
1750, d. 15 Jun 1834

Sarah (Johnson) Terrell died between 1775 and 1780
and David
remarried on 5 Oct 1782 to Sarah Goode. She died in 1788 and he
married
for a third time to Patty Johnson on 25 Feb 1793. In 1781,
David moved his family
to Bedford (now Campbell County,
Virginia) where he died in 1805. Four of his
sons, Benjamin,
Edward, David and Samuel moved their families to Clinton and
Highland
Counties in Ohio starting in 1806. Daughter Winnifred
and her second husband
William Moore also moved to Ohio
about the same time.
David Terrell (born
1729) was the oldest son of David and
Agatha (Chiles) Terrell. The elder David
Terrell married about
1727 to Agatha Chiles, the daughter of Micajah Chiles.
See the
following section on the Chiles Family. David's brother Henry
married
Anne Chiles, a sister to Agatha.
David and Agatha (Chiles) Terrell made their
home in Caroline
County about 40 miles north of Richmond. David was born
about
1695/1700. They had the following children
(1) David Terrell*, b. 1729, d. 1805
m. 19 Jan 1749, Louisa Co., Virginia, Sarah Johnson
(2) Henry Terrell, b. 1730,

m. 1770, William Burress
(12)
Jonathan Terrell, b. 1755
m. Margaret Hunnicutt
David Terrell and his
wife Agatha joined the Society of Friends.
David Terrell was appointed one of
the overseers of one of the
first Quaker meetings set up in Virginia, the Cedar
Creek
Meeting on 12 Mar 1739. Later a meeting was set up in Caroline
County
and David and his brother Henry were leaders in that
church.
David Terrell
died in 1759. His will was dated 15 Mar 1751 and
was proved 12 Apr 1759. Agatha
died in 1766. They evidently
accumulated a large amount of land because each
son received at
least 200 acres in the will.
David Terrell was the son
of William Terrell who married
Susannah Waters. They resided in Hanover County,
Virginia
after 1720 where William died in 1743. William and Susannah
(Waters)
Terrell had the following children (generally accepted as
correct)
(1) William
Terrell, Jr., d. c1755 Caroline Co., Virginia
(2) Joel Terrell, Sr., d. 1758,
Hanover Co., Virginia
m. Elizabeth Oxford
(3) Anne Terrell, m. David Lewis
(4)
David Terrell*, b. c1695/1700. d. 1759, Caroline Co., Virginia
m. Agatha Chiles
(5)
Henry Terrell, d. 1760, Caroline Co., Virginia
m. Ann Chiles
(6) Timothy Terrell,
d. 1763, Orange Co., North Carolina
(7) James Terrell, d. c1722 Caroline Co.,
Virginia
(8) John Terrell, d. c1785, Franklin Co., North Carolina
(9) Mary
Terrell, m. Mathew Mills
There were probably other daughters but no one has
confirmed
their names. It is believed that William and Susannah's children
were
all born between 1690 and 1710 in New Kent County, later
Hanover County.
This
William Terrell is the son of Richmond Terrell who came to
America in 1656. William
was probably born about 1670/5 in
Virginia. His father, Richmond Terrell, was
baptized on 17 Oct
1624 at St. Giles Parish, Reading, England. It is not clear
if he
married in England or after he immigrated to North America in
1656.
Besides William, he had two other sons, Richmond, Jr. and
Timothy.
Richmond
Terrell, Sr. was the son of Robert Terrell. Robert
married Jane Baldwin, the
daughter of Robert and Joan (Pigeon)
Baldwin, on 29 Jun 1617 at St. Giles Parish.
Jane died in 1661 and
it is not known when Robert Terrell died.
One of
the published genealogies on the Terrells takes this Robert
Terrell's heritage
back another seventeen generations to a Sir
Walter Tyrrell of Normandy who married
Adeliza, a daughter of
Richard le Clare and Rohnese, his wife was a daughter of
Walter
Gifford, the Elder. Walter Gifford served England in many
offices including
Archbishop of Canterbury during the period of
Henry III who died in 1272.
Another
Terrell history says the name started out from the town
of Tirel, in France.
The founder of the English and Irish Terrell
families was Sir Walter de Tirel
who went to England with
William, the Conqueror. The Genealogy of Richmond and
William
Terrell by Joseph Henry Terrell, of England, gives the
descent of the Terrells
in England and America from Edward I
and Eleanor of Castile.
