The Bolinger Family

Taken from An Addington/Chalfant Family History by David Vern Addington, published 1992.

Harry Vern Addington's paternal grandmother was Huldah Ruth
Bolinger, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Goshorn) Bolinger.
Huldah was born in Pennsylvania and married David Addington
on 27 Nov 1851 in Randolph County, Indiana. David and
Huldah Addington farmed the land in section 36 of White River
Township that was the original Addington farmstead in White
River Township. Huldah's exact birthdate is not known. Her
death record lists 20 Nov 1820, but this must be a mistake
meaning 1830. However, the 1850 (age 20), 1860 (27), 1870 (38),
1880 (49) and 1900 (Oct 1831) censuses (generally taken in
mid-year) give very conflicting dates. The Maxville Cemetery
records list only the years 1830-1907, ae 76-9-29. Taking her age
at death and death date of 18 Sep 1907, would give a birth date of
20 Nov 1830.

The Bolinger family moved to Randolph County, Indiana
between 1835 and 1840. This was a time of rapid growth for the
county and land was taken up very rapidly. Data indicate that
the family of Jacob Bolinger moved into Stony Creek Township
before 1840 as shown in that census. The 1850 census shows their
son Moses to have been born in Pennsylvania in 1835 and their
daughter Sophia to have been born in Indiana in 1839. Generally
families moved as family groups but no records of any other
Bolingers or Goshorn families in Randolph County have been
found so Jacob's family may have made this move entire on their
own. A family story says that Jacob's father also accompanied the
family on their migration west but then returned to
Pennsylvania.

The 1840 census lists Jacob Bolinger in Stony Creek Township as
age 30-40, wife age 30-40 and 1M<5, 1F<5 and 1F5-10. The
children would correspond to Huldah, Moses and Sophia listed
below. It also lists in White River Township the family of John
Bolinger, age 50-60 and wife age 50-60. This John Bolinger whose
name was spelled Bolander (or sometimes Bolender) was born in
Germany and does not appear to be related to our Jacob Bolinger.
The 1882 Tucker History of Randolph County says this John
Bolander was a soldier in the army of Napoleon. He appears to
have arrived in Randolph County about 1838. Later the family
spelling of the name became commonly spelled as Bolinger.

The 1850 Randolph County census shows the Jacob Bolinger
family with Jacob being 42, born in Pennsylvania and wife Mary
S. age 40, also born in Pennsylvania, and children including
Hulda*, age 20, b. PA
Moses, 15, b. PA
Sophia, 11, b. IN
Elizabeth J., 8, b. IN
Martha E., 5, b. IN
Samuel R., 3 b. IN
Mary J. Grow, 25
They lived in White River Township south of Maxville. Huldah
Ruth Bolinger married on 27 Nov 1851 to David Addington, the
youngest son of Joseph and Celia (Townsend) Addington. Moses
E. Bolinger married Mariah Louisa Miller on 22 Jul 1858. Sophia
Bolinger married on 25 Jul 1855 to Henry Addington, the son of
Thomas and Beulah (Hunt) Addington and a nephew of David
Addington. Two of Jacob's daughters, two of his granddaughters
and one great granddaughter married Addingtons so there was a
close tie between the families for several generations.

The 1860 census shows the Jacob Bolinger (misspelled as Billinger
in the census) family in Stony Creek Township
Jacob Billinger, age 50, PA
Mary S., 52, PA
Mary Jane, 35, PA
Elizabeth, 17, IN
Martha, 15, IN
Samuel R., 14, IN
Hannah, 9, IN

Jacob and Mary Bolinger are living in Stony Creek township so
they must have moved to another farm sometime after 1850. It is
not known what relationship Mary Jane was to the family but by
her age, she is probably not their natural daughter but adopted
into the family. There is a Randolph County marriage record of a
Mary J. Grow marrying Lucas Ullum on 20 Dec 1851. Evidently
he must have died and Mary Jane moved back in with the
Bolinger family. Shortly after the 1860 census, Jacob Bolinger
died on 27 Dec 1860 and is buried in the old section of the
Maxville Cemetery.

The 1870 census lists two Bolinger households. Moses Bolinger is
listed as age 33, born Pennsylvania with wife Mariah, age 29,
born Indiana. Children are
Waldo B., 10, b. IN
Indiana, 7, b. IN
Charles P., 5, b. IN
Minnie, 2, b. IN
Samuel, 23, b. IN (Moses' brother)

In a separate household nearby are
Mary S. Bollinger, 61, b. PA
Mary J. Grow, 44, PA

Mary Bolinger died on 10 Oct 1875, age 67 years, 6 months, and
27 days, and is buried in Maxville Cemetery about five graves
away from her husband in the oldest part of the cemetery. This
would make her birthday 23 Mar 1808.

The 1874 Randolph County Plat map shows M. E. Bolinger
owning land in Section 20 of Stony Creek Township. Moses E.
Bolinger, the son of Jacob and Mary (Goshorn) Bolinger, was
born on 17 May 1836 in Pennsylvania and was still a very young
boy when he accompanied his family west to Indiana. He
married Mariah Louisa Miller on 22 Jul 1858 in Randolph
County. Moses and Mariah had the following children

(1) Waldo Rosco Bolinger, b. 12 May 1861, Indiana, d. 1922
m. 10 Jul 1888, Randolph Co., Indiana, Rosa Smith
(2) Indiana Rosa Bolinger, b. 9 Aug 1893, Randolph Co., Indiana,
d. 23 Dec 1920

(4) Minnie E. Bolinger, b. 9 Aug 1867, Indiana
m. 29 Mar 1889, Randolph Co., Indiana, Kelly S. Smithson
(5) Lilly Pearl Bolinger, b. 29 May 1873, d. 2 Jul 1931
m. 30 May 1889, Asa Robert Addington

The oldest son of Moses, Waldo Rosco Bolinger, and his wife
Rosa Smith had a large family of nine children
(1) Carl Bolinger, d. 24 Jul 1892
(2) Hattie Bolinger, d. 20 Jul 1894
(3) Fleety G. Bolinger, b. 15 Dec 1892
m. 25 Jan 1915, Delaware Co., Forest Morris Addington
(4) Neal W. Bolinger, b. 14 Jan 1895
(5) Wilbur Bolinger, b. c1901, m. Dorothy Current
(6) Madonna Bolinger, b. 7 Oct 1902
(7) Mildred Bolinger, b. c1903
(8) Edith U. Bolinger, b. c1905
(9) Louise Adaline Bolinger, b. 2 Dec 1907

Moses' daughter Indiana Rosa Bolinger married on 20 Jun 1887 to
George Emerson Addington but they had no children. She died
on 30 Dec 1920 in Randolph County. Moses' son Charles T.
Bolinger married on 16 Jun 1887 to Nettie A. Barnes and they had
one son, Ernest E. Bolinger who married Inez Wise and they had
four children. Charles Bolinger died on 4 Oct 1912 in Randolph
County.

Moses' daughter Minnie E. Bolinger married on 29 Mar 1889 to
Kelly S. Smithson and had at least one daughter Ruby who
married George Chalfant.

The youngest daughter, Lilly Pearl Bolinger, married on 30 May
1889 to Asa Robert Addington. They had four children
(1) Perry Orvil Addington, b. 8 Mar 1890, d. 13 Feb 1967
m. Mae Veirl Jones
(2) Cleo Louisa Addington, b. 22 Mar 1895, d. 6 Dec 1904
(3) Kathleen Rebecca Addington, b. 28 Sep 1897, Randolph Co.,
Indiana, d. 28 Jan 1986, Clawson, MI
m. 27 Aug 1919, Randolph Co., IN, George Russell Patterson
(4) Paul O. Addington, b. 12 Nov 1905, d. 14 Nov 1905

Samuel Bolinger, the youngest son of Jacob and Mary, was born
on 9 Oct 1846 in Randolph County. He married on 7 Nov 1874 to
Samatha Clevenger and they had children
(1) Lily G. Bolinger, b. 1873
(2) Leuela Bolinger, b. 1875
(3) Charles W. Bolinger, b. 1879

The 1880 Randolph County census lists two Bolinger households
Moses E. Bolinger, age 45, PA
Marian, 39, IN
Waldo, 19, IN
Rosa, 16, IN
Charles T., 15, IN
Miney E. 12, IN
Lily P., 7, IN

Samuel Bolinger, age 31, IN
Samatha, 28, IN
Lily G., 7, IN
Leuela, 5, IN
Charles W., 1, IN

In trying to trace the Bolinger family, the 1830 Indiana census
lists no Bolingers in Randolph County or in any surrounding
county, and since Huldah was born in 1830 in Pennsylvania, the
families must still be there. The death record for Huldah lists her
mother as Mary Goshorn and the death record for Moses
Bolinger lists his mother as Mary Goosehorn.

The 1830 Pennsylvania census lists five Jacob Bolingers of various
spellings with Bolinger/Bollinger families in Huntingdon,
Alleghany, Lancaster and York counties. There are also ten
Gooshorn (sometimes spelled Gosham) families in Huntingdon
County with two families in Mifflin County and two families in
Beaver County. All of the Gooshorn families living in
Huntingdon County are in Tell Township as are four of the nine
Bolinger families in Huntingdon County. One of the two Jacob
Bolinger families in this county is shown as 1M<5, 1M20-30,
1F5-10 and 1F20-30. This could be our Jacob Bolinger but the
ages of the children are too old. Either the ages of the children
are in error or perhaps Jacob and his family are still living with
his parents or her parents.

The Bolinger families in 1830 in Huntingdon County are headed
by Jacob (age 20-30), Peter (age 50-60), John (age 40-50), Peter
(age 50-60), Benjamin (age 50-60), Adam (age 70-80), Michael (age
20-30), Jacob (age 60-70) and Abraham (age 40-50). It would
appear that Adam and Jacob are brothers and are the patriarches
of the family in this county. The 1790 Pennsylvania Head of
Households shows three Adam Bolander families in
Northumberland County along with four other Bolander families
head by Frederick, Henry, John and Michael so the family
appears to be concentrated there in 1790. One of these Adam
Bolanders is probably Adam Bolander, Sr. who is listed in DAR
records as an outstanding patriot. Adam Bolander, Sr. was born
on 22 May 1735 in Germany and immigrated to Pennsylvania
before the revolution. During the Revolutionary War he was a
member of the Committee of Public Safety from Pennsylvania
Township in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. He
married Elizabeth Krespie and had known children Adam, Jr.,
John, Frederick, John, Henry and Elizabeth. Adam Bolander, Sr.
died in 1820 in Snyder County, Pennsylvania.
